What a resume–job description match should tell you

A resume job description match compares one version of your resume with one target posting. It should help you find requirements that your resume already proves, terms that may be buried, and gaps that need an honest decision. It cannot know the employer's internal screening questions, candidate pool, referral process, or final hiring judgment.

CheckATS uses a published, repeatable diagnostic rather than claiming to reproduce every applicant tracking system. The match score summarizes selected requirement coverage, structure, and parsing signals. It is useful for comparing your own revisions against the same posting. It is not a probability of getting an interview and is not a score sent to the employer.

How to match your resume to a job description

  1. Step 1

    Start with the complete posting

Use the responsibilities and qualification sections, not a shortened social post. Keeping the full context helps separate an actual requirement from company language, benefits, or a passing mention.

  2. Step 2

    Inspect requirement evidence

For each selected term, CheckATS shows the job-description source and the resume lines it found. Required, preferred, and explicitly excluded requirements are treated differently so one optional phrase does not carry the same weight as a must-have qualification.

  3. Step 3

    Fix the strongest truthful gap

If you have the experience but the evidence is buried, rewrite the relevant bullet with the action, context, and outcome. If you do not have the skill or credential, do not add it simply to increase a match percentage.

  4. Step 4

    Recheck the same job

Keep the posting fixed and compare the revised resume again. A useful improvement makes the evidence clearer and the extracted document easier to read; it does not merely repeat more words from the ad.

Read the report in this order

Parsed resume text: confirm that headings, dates, bullets, and important terms survived extraction. If the reading order is wrong, repair the document before editing for keywords.

Required and preferred requirements: start with missing hard requirements that you can genuinely support. Preferred qualifications are useful context, but they should not be presented as mandatory when the posting does not say so.

Evidence lines: read the exact resume sentence beside the job-description source. A word appearing somewhere in a skills list may be weaker than a bullet showing how you used it.

Format and structure: address missing text, corrupted characters, or absent core sections before polishing language. CheckATS can inspect extracted text and rule-based signals; it cannot certify every visual layout against every employer parser.

Privacy and truthful editing

The free comparison runs in this browser after the page loads. Your original resume file is not uploaded for the free check. Temporary draft retention is off by default; if you turn it on, this browser tab keeps the parsed text and job description in sessionStorage for up to 30 minutes so you can return after signing in.

A paid rewrite is a separate action. Before it runs, the interface explains that extracted resume text, the job description, and the missing-keyword list are sent to the service and generation provider. Review every suggested date, number, employer, credential, and skill before using it.
